Winchester Consort was established to enable singers to work with guest musical directors and composers in performing both contemporary works and established choral repertoire. The choir of invited, experienced choral singers also aims to raise charitable funds and to provide opportunities for young and aspiring musicians.
The choir gives themed concerts and recitals, has a repertoire of both secular and non-secular music and is also experienced in singing in the liturgical setting. We have been delighted to have had the opportunity to give a dozen or more premiere performances and to work with Patrick Hawes, Timothy Parsons, Nobuya Monta, Philip Godfrey, Robert Draper and Ed Welch in doing so.
The Consort has continued to set very high standards of performance since its very successful inaugural concert in 2012 in the Quire of Winchester Cathedral. Conducted by classical composer Patrick Hawes, and centred around his Song of Songs, the programme included the premiere performance of his beautiful setting of Psalm 23, written specially for the Consort and for its first concert.
